Rally to End Family Separation - Victoria

The Victoria Chapter of Women’s March Canada is organizing a Rally Against Family Separation on Saturday, June 30, 2018, 12-2pm at the Victoria Legislature Building in the Inner Habour.

Our goal is to raise awareness, to provide informative experience-, fact- and solution-based direct actions, as laid out by experts working on immigration, refugee, and Indigenous justice issues around the world, across Canada, and in BC, and to show solidarity with the detained immigrants and refugees and separated families at the U.S. - Mexican border, and around the globe.

We invited five speakers:

  1. Tiffany Śwxeloselwet Joseph
  2. Isabel O’Kanese
  3. Elizabeth May
  4. Fernando Garci-Crespo
  5. Sharmarke Dubow

This issue is gaining awareness because of the practices by ICE in the United States, but this happens in our own backyard as well. Canada has a history of ripping Indigenous families apart through legislation such as the residential school system (the last of which closed in 1996), and the foster system

"Despite being less than seven per cent of the population, in 2011, Indigenous children represented more than 48 per cent of all children in care in Canada"

Canada also has a history of separating migrant families

https://www.thestar.com/vancouver/2018/06/18/canada-detains-migrant-kids-too-and-it-needs-to-stop-experts-say.html

"immigration experts and government critics say Canada Border Services Agency’s ongoing detention of minors — generally with their families — is deeply damaging to child welfare and mental health; on average, 182 minors a year have been detained across Canada since Liberals took office in 2015"

This needs to stop. Join Women's March Canada: Victoria Chapter, as we contact our representatives to urge them to get the UN to intervene in the US, and to stop the practice in Canada, and then march with us on June 30th!

Show what it means to truly be human and show your compassion for all those who have clearly lost their humanity.

Please bring homemade signs!!!

*Note: Yes, children are welcome to this event.
