We acknowledge with respect the Lkwungen-speaking peoples on whose traditional territory we occupy, gather and march on and the Songhees, Esquimalt and WSÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. We thank them for allowing us to gather and hold this event on their territory.
This year we will celebrate, encourage, and work towards science that is for everyone. Science isn’t just for scientists, it impacts all of us - by protecting our health and our environment, and providing us with facts and evidence to hold our governments accountable. When scientists, whether at home or abroad, are silenced, we all suffer. When knowledge generation is underfunded or suppressed, our communities and democracies suffer.
We also recognize that the benefits of science, and the opportunities to do science, are not accessible to everyone. Scientists and scientific institutions need to do better to ensure the voices of marginalized groups are amplified, and that actionable steps are taken to increase diversity within the research community.
Join us Saturday, April 14th for a March for Science 2018 event!
We will begin at 1:00 pm at Centennial Square, with a short series of speakers from the local community talking about why "Science is for Everyone". We will then march down Government Street to the Parliament building.
This year’s event is lead by a grassroots effort from the local Victoria community, and supported by Evidence for Democracy, a fact-driven, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization promoting the transparent use of evidence in government decision-making in Canada.
If you would like to help with organizing the event, or are able to make a monetary or in-kind donation to cover the costs of the event contact firstname.lastname@example.org
