WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RUN?
We need more progressive women in leadership positions. I stand for equality, working together, looking after people, human rights, women's rights, Indigenous rights, LGBTQ rights and creating better communities for our youth, families, seniors, and everyone. I enjoy giving back to the community. I am running for City Council for a second term this October 2018.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
Our outdoor recreation is world class in our community so outdoor activities definitely rank up as my top favourite things to do: hiking, mountain biking, windsurfing, standup-paddleboarding to name a few.
TELL US ABOUT THE GREATEST CHALLENGES YOUR COMMUNITY FACES?
One of the greatest challenges we face is apathy. Apathy by citizens about voting in elections, apathy about being engaged in what local government is actually doing until it directly affects their life or they hear a rumour about something, and apathy about how serious climate change is and making any actual progress forward on adaption and mitigation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. There is a lot of willful blindness and allowing daily distractions to cloud people's ability to see the bigger picture.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO IMPROVE WOMEN'S HEALTH IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
A group of us have formed a working group and are looking into forming a health collective for women, trans and non-binary. There are some issues falling through the cracks that we want to address and find support for locally.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO IMPROVE WOMEN'S ECONOMIC SECURITY IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
I strive to create balanced opportunities for women and focus on small business support and retention as well as attracting a diverse network of different economic opportunities. I enjoy reaching out to women to help in whatever way I can. I also encourage other women to run for politics as more women leaders will change the shape of our women's future
WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO IMPROVE WOMEN'S SAFETY IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
We are lucky to have a really safe community so sticking together and ensuring that violence against women is not tolerated and speaking out about it is important. I have produced The Vagina Monologues in our community multiple times to raise awareness about ending violence against women and raised money for our local transition house each time. We need to continue supporting transition houses for women and children as well as other organizations that empower and support women to thrive.
