Restore all provincial funding to Ontario College of Midwives

Another cut affecting primarily women.

"Doug Ford's government has revoked current and future funding for the College of Midwives of Ontario, the regulatory body that oversees more than 900 midwives and has had government support for 25 years."

In September 2018, the Ford government was told by the Tribunal to negotiate with midwives to end the pay equity gap. To date, the Ford Tories have refused to negotiate.

The statement said the changes will have no impact on the public. "We cannot cut our services and programs, as the College's work is mandated by our governing legislation," it said.

"It is likely that midwives will have to pay more to the College on an annual basis," the College added. "This is not news we wanted to share."

Whereas the College of Midwives is responsible for licensing and regulating the profession of midwifery; and the province of Ontario is responsible for funding medical care;

We the undersigned, as constituents and residents of Ontario, demand Ontario restore funding to the Ontario College of Midwives immediately.

Removing funding places the burden of financing the college on approximately 900 members whose fees are capped by the province.

    Midwives delivered our 2 kids at home saving tax payers loads of money and supporting us in invaluable ways. We need to support midwives so they can do their jobs well! The benefits for society are huge.

    I had midwives for all of my pregnancies (4) and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am very grateful for their service and the opportunity to have them as my medical practitioners during my pregnancies. I did have two separate consultations with two different obstetricians and one said, “ you don’t need to see me, you have the midwives, only call if there is an emergency. The other a Caesarian because of breach. He said “this is what I’m suppose to do a regular delivery can be done by the midwives.” Need anymore be said,

    Both of our children were born under the care of midwives at a time when we had to pay for this service. Although the cost to us was great at the time, we would not have had it any other way, as the consistency of care, the understanding, the kindness of those midwives allowed me to deliver my children in an atmosphere in which I could most feel comfortable. I have recently witnessed again this high level of care and support to a young woman I know with the birth of her second child. Midwives can help make births easier, hospital stays shorter, and follow-up care more thorough. They can save the medical system money, so why cut their services? Don’t. Kathleen Corrigan
