Restore all provincial funding to Ontario College of Midwives

Another cut affecting primarily women.

"Doug Ford's government has revoked current and future funding for the College of Midwives of Ontario, the regulatory body that oversees more than 900 midwives and has had government support for 25 years."

In September 2018, the Ford government was told by the Tribunal to negotiate with midwives to end the pay equity gap. To date, the Ford Tories have refused to negotiate.

The statement said the changes will have no impact on the public. "We cannot cut our services and programs, as the College's work is mandated by our governing legislation," it said.

"It is likely that midwives will have to pay more to the College on an annual basis," the College added. "This is not news we wanted to share."

Whereas the College of Midwives is responsible for licensing and regulating the profession of midwifery; and the province of Ontario is responsible for funding medical care;

We the undersigned, as constituents and residents of Ontario, demand Ontario restore funding to the Ontario College of Midwives immediately.

Removing funding places the burden of financing the college on approximately 900 members whose fees are capped by the province.

    I am interested in organizing some direct action around this issue. A breast feeding sit in outside Ford’s office? Please keep me posted on any action planned. I would love to help mobilize some other parents on maternity leave that have time and are ready to act!

    My daughter is just 2 years into her career as a midwife. She has huge debt that was garnered due to 4 years schooling to train as a midwife. Had to have a car, couldn’t have a part time job while studying. Already pays a lot of fees to the college and now she will have to pay more. This is unfair. Certainly hope you are doing this to others in the medical field ie doctors. Why should these women help pay for the deficit when their contracts weren’t fairly negotiated by the previous government.

    Helen E Bratzel Are you going to take away funding for the College of Physicians and Surgeons as well? Because it is a much larger governing body, with many more “members”, so you would save even more money for taxpayers. Or are you just going for women and children first, with your budget cuts?

    Midwives are invaluable to family care. I cannot imagine going through pregnancy, birth and the first one and a half months of my son’s life without their unwavering support and wealth of knowledge! My team of midwives supported me through a difficult pregnancy, a long and arduous labour and a tongue tie, coaching me through initial nursing problems. Beyond that, midwives provide evidence-based care and help to inform families on their various options, allowing families to make an educated decision for themselves on what works best for them and their baby. They also prioritize care to communities that have limited access and/or needs that are often not met in doctor/hospital care such as LGBTQ+ families, indigenous families, and families with undocumented peoples and recent immigrants by helping bridge language barriers, honouring different cultural birthing practices and the place of ceremony in birth, by understanding and aknowledging different practices surrounding pregnancy, and by understanding and respecting the many different forms a family can take and the place of identity in pregnancy and birth.

    Every birthing person deserves the birth that they want and that works best for them and their family and midwives honour that and aid in helping to create a safe birthing plan, and when necessary, help their birthing person adjust it and adjust to a new plan according to changing circumstances and what’s best for both the baby and birther. I had planned an at-home water birth, but after 32 hours in labour and not much advancement, my midwife helped me adjust my birth plan, confirming my decision to get an epidural, which allowed me to have some rest before the 2nd and 3rd stages of labour.

    When I first found out I was pregnant (2 days after a missed period) I called all the midwifery clinics in Toronto and only one had an opening (and that’s because my friend was a student midwife there). The College of Midwives of Ontario needs MORE funding, not less. Midwives deserve higher wages and we need to fund more midwifery clinics, so that every family has the opportunity to have the comprehensive family care we were fortunate enough to have. Please sign and support these amazing human beings and the families they care for.

    Cutting funding to the College of Midwives is mean spirited and extremely shortsighted. These dedicated professionals devote their lives to ensuring mothers and babies are healthy and take a huge strain off our already stressed medical system.

    I can’t help but this this cut is ideological as it serves no real purpose I can think of.

    Midwives saved the life of my wife and daughter and I will not forgot how terribly the PC party and Doug Ford is treating them.
