Women's March Canada: Winnipeg Chapter is Ready for 2019

Winnipeg | January 14, 2019 - On January 19th and 20th people around the world will flood the streets in protest of gender inequalities and gender-based violence. The third Anniversary March, known as #WomensWave, celebrates 2017’s revolutionary Women’s March which brought together 6 million marchers across the globe in support of women’s rights and freedoms.

The mission of Women’s March Canada is to inspire, unite, and lead the charge for the advancement of women across Canada. In 2018, Women’s March Canada help promote and organize 1,198 events, gathered 10,626 petition signatures and is working with 1043 volunteers across the country. This work’s aim is to make the equality of women in Canada the new norm.

“We are here to give voice to women to stand up and speak out about things that are important to them.” said Women’s March Canada Executive Director Sara Bingham. “The first Women’s March, a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, the #MeToo movement, unfounded sexual assault cases across the country, are not individual movements. It’s time to gather together and end violence against women in Canada. It’s time to take action.” (https://cfc-swc.gc.ca/violence/strategy-strategie/index-en.html)

Marches are to be held in cities across Canada and around the world including Lagos, Geneva, Kampala, Lusaka, Oahu, Victoria, Kamloops, Calgary, Ottawa, Sarnia, Saint John, and Winnipeg. A live stream of the marches will be available on the Women’s March Global Facebook page. (https://www.facebook.com/womensmarchglobal/)

The Women's March Canada: Winnipeg Chapter is one of the newest chapters of Women’s March Canada. By protesting on January 19th, 2019 in solidarity with our sisters globally and committing a theme of #WomenUnited we hope to draw attention to the need for understanding and unity between the groups and communities of women in Winnipeg. Our chapter is working to create stronger bonds and to draw attention to the need for accessible healthcare, economic security and pay equity, representation, and safety.
